So basically I need to reference a book I read five years ago for a project, but for the life of me I cannot recall what the bleep it is called. And what I remeber google doesn't understand.
Here goes: setting, near future in Toronto main character is Peter Hobson, who uses "fobson" as his password because 'F' sounds like "PH" Peter is the head of a company that sells brainwave scanners for residential use, to tell the status of your child, spouse, eta. He has developed a scanner that is capable of scanning every individual neuron in the brain, which he uses on an old lady (with her permission) to tell exactly when the brain dies. doing this he finds an unusual phenomena, which turns out to be the person's soul leaving the body. there is an interlude where he tries to find when the soul first arrives in the body, to help him understand if he and his wife killed a person when she had an abortion. later on, in order to understand more about the soul he works with his friend, the owner of a AI computer company, to scan his entire neuron map into a computer to create a virtual version of him. he created three version by deleting memories of the real world; Spirit, a version with no memories of the real world, Immortal (wrong name but I don't recall the correct), one that has no memories of dying an aging, and normal, one that has not been altered. because peter was scanned he had induced a lot of hate towards somebody that slept with his wife, all three AI's had to cope with it, spirit and Immortal using their changed perspectives to cope, and normal not being able to causing him to start hiring a hit man to kill the guy, and then to attempt to kill the detective that studied the situation. the book starts as an explanation that is told is told by peter to the detective explaining why she was shot and is dying, and it ends as her being scanned and turned into another Spirit, so that she can delete normal. there is some other tidbits that i recall; just not at the moment. thanks to anybody that can help.
